The Alsace is the largest and one of the most important wine districts of France. Especially the excellent white wines like Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer make the area to the signboard of French white wine. The sparkling wine Crémant is the Alsation counterpart for the champagne, which is patented for their region. The local Marc de Gewürztraminer contrasts with the Italian grappa. You find wine estates all over the Alsation wine route. From Châtenois you can turn on the route north or south. Many local specialties as magret de canard (breast of duck), tarte flambée (thin pizza with local cheese and different addings), escargots (snails) or a choucroute garnie (sauerkraut with different pork meat and sausages). The very traditional baeckoffe (meat stew) is not eaten by local like the scotch Haggis.
